The City

Durham City itself is relatively compact and easy to explore on foot, centred around the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Durham Cathedral and Castle, with the Cathedral considered as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe. There are lots of fantastic restaurants, cafes and a cool bar scene and, as the city sits along the River Wear, the riverbanks are perfect places to enjoy a stroll or hire a rowing boat on a sunny day. Around the Market Place, you will find some of the best architecture in the city and also a selection of independent shops, especially within Durham Market Hall. The city also has lots of green spaces to enjoy, both in the parks nearby the river, Wharton Park and the Botanic Gardens, which are located just outside the city centre.

There is also one of the most prestigious universities in the country located here, with students from across the UK and the world adding to the cosmopolitan vibe in the city.

Durham is ideally situated for commuting across the country as it sits on the East Coast Main Line providing rail connections to London in under 3 hours, as well having access to a superb road network including the A1(M). The nearest airport to Durham is Newcastle International Airport, which is located around 24 miles away. The larger cities of Newcastle and York are within easy access and the hidden gem of Northumberland isn’t too far away either.
